This study was undertaken to determine if Juglandis Semen Aquacupuncture (JA) has a protective effect against glycerol-induced acute renal failure in rabbits. Rabbits were dehydrated for 24 hr and then injected with 8㎖/㎏ of 50% glycerol, ne-half of the dose in each hindlimb muscle. In experiments for JA effect, rabbits received 0.5㎖ of Juglandis Semen-herb extraction in both sides of Shinsu(BL_(23)) for 2 days before and 2 days after injection of glycerol. Glycerol injection increased serum creatinine levels, and induced a decrease in urine volume and glomerular filtration rate, which were accompanied by an increase in fractional excretion of Na^+, K^+ and phosphate. These results show that glycerol injection results in acute renal failure. JA significantly decreased serum creatinine levels, and increased the reduced glomerular filtration rate and decreased the increased fractional excretion of Na^+, K^+ and phosphate induced by glycerol injection.
These results suggest that JA could be used in prevention and treatment of acute renal failure. However, the precise mechanisms of JA protection remain to be determined.
